Today I would like to introduce you to the gourmet company called Savory Spice Shop based out of the Denver, Colorado area. The company has been in business since 2004 and a few years ago they opened additional retail stores in the Denver area. If you are looking for a great business, they also offer a franchise opportunity.
The great folks at Savory Spice Shop sent me 6 of their gourmet spices to try out for all of you. As an avid cook and baker...I was really excited about doing this review! Here is what we received:
*Vietnamese Saigon Cinnamon - our best selling item in the store and essential for baking!
* Pickling Spice - I thought since you do some canning you might enjoy this for pickling.
* Summit County Seasoning - great for long crockpot cooking.
* Pikes Peak Butchers Rub - great for grilling steaks or adding to burgers.
* Pearl Street Plank Rub - fantastic on grilled salmon.
* Barrier Reef Seasoning - a very versatile citrus blend, good on all fish, chicken, veggies, you name it!
Our Review: The first item I decided to try out is the Vietnamese Saigon Cinnamon and I decided to use that in my favorite Zucchini Pineapple Bread Recipe and baked my bread according to recipe direction. As soon as you take the lid off the cinnamon you immediately will smell a sweet cinnamon scent which tells me that this is a very fresh product. I love how finely ground this cinnamon is as I am not a fan of coarsely ground cinnamon. In addition to using it in my bread recipe we have been sprinkling it on top of our breakfast toast and in our breakfast oatmeal. It is absolutely fabulous and in my opinion, the best cinnamon I have ever used.
The second item I tried out was the Summit County Seasoning which is salt-free and for this one...I made a big pot of Tex-Mex chili in my crockpot. This is a very versatile spice blend that is perfect for your soups & stews. Again, as soon as you remove the cap...you smell a fresh product. I think it made our pot of chili better than ever!
The third item I tried out was the Pearl St. Plank Rub which is great as a rub on poultry, pork and on salmon. We decided to use it as a rub on some turkey breasts and turkey legs that we threw on the grill last weekend. I love using rubs as they are versatile and they are easy to use and not as messy as marinades. The rub gave our grilled turkey a sweet but yet smokey flavor which was really nice and a great way to spice up that humdrum turkey meat.
The fourth item we tried out was the Pike's Peak Butcher's Rub which is a great rub for chicken, turkey, pork chops and steaks and can be used when making burgers and meatloaf. We decided to make my grandma's meatloaf recipe and added a 1/2 teaspoon of the rub into our recipe and WOW...it was delicious!
The fifth item we tried was the Barrier Reef Seasoning which is good on pork, duck and fish. We decided to use it on two items...first being we seasoned some chicken with it and second...we used it as a baked potato seasoning & just sprinkled a little bit on top of our baked potatoes. This spice has a nice fruity but yet peppery taste to it which is beautifully blended together. This was my hubby's favorite spice that we used.
Finally, I received a jar of their Pickling Spice which I have not used yet since I don't start my heavy duty pickle canning until late August or early September. I am really looking forward to giving this one a try in about 4-5 weeks.
Overall Impression: We loved all of the products we tried and we look forward to using them some more in various dishes over the next few months. I did want to mention how beautifully packaged my spices were...they came in a gift box and packaged among my glass jars of spices were various leaves (like bay leaves) and loose cinnamon sticks. What a beautiful presentation so these spices would make a fabulous gift for the foodie lover on your gift-giving list.
I would highly recommend that you check out the Savory Spice Shop for all of your gourmet spice needs. I think they have just about every spice and combination of spices that you would ever need! Furthermore...everything was FRESH and you could tell that these items didn't sit on some dusty shelf some where and it is always important to buy as fresh as possible spices if you want them to taste great. My order arrived to my home quickly and was beautifully packaged. Thank you Savory Spice Shop for participating in a product review for all of our blog readers.
