My grandmother was a fantastic cook and every weekend we would head over to her home to enjoy a delicious meal. Now that she is gone...I have been digging through her old recipe cards and trying to recreate those dishes for my own family to enjoy.
One of our favorite recipes was her old-fashioned baked beans which are made with molasses to give them that sweet taste that we all love and enjoy. This recipe is easy-to-prepare but does take an hour to bake.
Grandma's Old-Fashioned Baked Beans Recipe
32 oz. can pork and beans in sauce
1/2 cup catsup or chili sauce
1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp. dry mustard
2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
dash of red pepper sauce
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1 tbsp. brown sugar, firmly packed
6 slices bacon, cut into thirds
2 tablespoons molasses
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine together all of the above ingredients except for the bacon and the 1 tablespoon of brown sugar. Place everything but those two ingredients into a large 3 quart casserole baking dish. Arrange the uncooked bacon on top and sprinkle the reserved brown sugar on top of that. Place baking dish into the oven and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until done. Remove and serve immediately.
